Relative pronouns agree in gender/number with the noun they refer to; their case depends on their role inside the relative clause. Nominative: der Mann, der dort steht (the man who is standing there). Accusative: der Mann, den ich gesehen habe (the man whom I saw). Masculine: der/den; feminine: die/die; neuter: das/das. So: die Frau, die ich getroffen habe (acc.) vs die Frau, die dort sitzt (nom.).
