Subordinate clauses (Nebensätze) are introduced by conjunctions and send the verb to the end.

  • dass (that): Ich weiß, dass du Recht hast. — verb hast at end.
  • weil (because): Er bleibt zu Hause, weil er krank ist. — verb ist at end.
  • wenn (if / when): Wenn es regnet, nehme ich einen Schirm. — verb regnet at end.

Word order: Conjunction + subject + … + verb (last). Do not put the verb in second position in the subordinate clause.

Common mistake: Using weil with verb in second position (weil er ist krank) is wrong; correct is weil er krank ist.
