Perfekt is the main past tense in spoken German. It is formed with haben or sein + past participle (Partizip II).

With haben: most verbs (machen → gemacht, lesen → gelesen).
With sein: movement (gehen → gegangen) or change of state (sterben → gestorben).

Position: Ich habe gestern ein Buch gelesen. The past participle goes at the end in main clauses; in subordinate clauses both auxiliary and participle are at the end: ..., weil ich das Buch gelesen habe.

Typical in Telc B1: Short texts and letters often use Perfekt for past events.
